Variety was a sweet character I couldn't help connecting with, and while some of her decisions could have been made more wisely, I also related to her sense of entrapment and the complexities of her psyche as she traversed a post-trauma life in an old-fashioned world. I also loved Max, with his strong sense of duty so at war with his own secret desires, and while his pride and lack of true communication frustrated me, I felt I understood his motives as well.
